Writing Performance Objectives

A goal is a descriptive statement which defines an ideal future state of being.
An objective is a descriptive statement which defines a measurable activity.

Major Concept:

Instructional objectives should be written in such a manner that they define:

  • Performance - What must a learner must do to demonstrate mastery? (Activity)
  • Criteria - How well must a learner perform? (Standard)
  • Condition - Under what circumstances must a learner perform? (Environment)
Major Concept:

Instructional objectives can be applied to three learning domains:

  • Cognitive - Knowledge and comprehension
  • Affective - Feelings and value
  • Psychomotor - Body movement or response
